Convento de San Payo

The Convent of San Payo was founded by the Franciscan friar, Gonçalo Marinho, in 1932. After several adversities (the extinction of religious orders and a devastating fire), the convent was abandoned and fell into a state of complete degradation, with its assets disappearing, some looted and others transferred to chapels and churches in the municipality. In the 80s of the 20th century, the building was acquired by the sculptor José Rodrigues who, together with the architect Viana de Lima, completely restored it, taking care to preserve part of its original design. Currently, the convent is the sculptor's residence and workshop, and also works as an Art Center, displaying collections of painting, sculpture and sacred art. In addition to exhibitions, it also hosts concerts, conferences and theater plays. Don't forget to admire the entire convent area, which is of a great beauty. A visit to these beautiful gardens is recommended, where you can also admire some sculptures by the sculptor José Rodrigues.
