Segundo dados históricos, a origem das queijadas de Sintra remonta ao século XIII, durante o reinado de D. Sancho II, sendo um meio de pagamento de foros. O local exato terá sido Ranholas, na freguesia de São Pedro de Penaferrim. Com o desenvolvimento do caminho-de-ferro a sua confeção deixou de se concentrar nesta localidade, passando também a ser comercializadas em Lisboa, que ajudou na sua industrialização, pelas mãos de uma senhora chamada Maria Sapa, em meados do século XVIII.

A wide, easily accessible beach, its wide stretch of sand is sheltered from the strong north winds and ends on a cliff to the south. Quite attended by surfers. Everey year it welcomes a competition of the World Bodyboard Championship and yet another of the Surf European Championship. Those who dislike the sea turbulence, may choose the sea water pool. On the surrounding cliffs there are pedestrian trails with wonderful landscapes. It has a first aid post, high quality restaurants, several terraces with many youngters and lively evenings.

In 1863, practically 100 years after th construction of the palace, Francis Cook asked Francis Birt to create the Monserrate Park. The park has thousands of trees and plants from different locations in the world. The most exotic come from Japan (bamboos) and from America (yuccos).
